MYOG Camera Tripod Leg Wrap

(Make Your Own Gear) Tripod leg wraps, custom and simple. Cheaper than the £35 neoprene ones in the shop.

I didn’t take any ‘step by step’ photos but its very straightforward if you know what your working with.

I recently decided to ditch the tripod bag and use a much more comfortable strap. The leg wraps make it much nicer to handle. Im using a Hanhel Triad 30 which is small and light (and cheap!) so it didn’t take much foam or wrap, I think the upper leg sections are only 30cm in length. Anyway, onto the detail…

Head to the nearest hardware store and pick up a length of pipe (insulation) lagging with an internal diameter to best suit the legs of your tripod. 1 length managed my small tripod with some left over. The smallest stuff should cost you less than £1. Next, get some cloth tape (Colour of your choice) that is self adhesive. I picked mine up from a fishing/shooting store for £7. Hockey stick tape will also work. Whichever you use you will need around 3m or more and that is if you wrap it carefully.

The foam should have a pre-made cut in it, measure up the right length and cut the 3 sections required, a bread knife works well for this. Slide the 1st one on then using some clear sticky tape wrap it tightly around the foam and close off the cut. Wrap it tightly across the full length of the leg to prevent it rotating. Next, take the cloth tape and wrap it diagonally down the leg, cut straight when finished. If your not very good at this you can use electrical tape to finish off the ends.

same process for the other legs and your done! simple.
